Images from the first day of destruction of Hasankeyf city centre. 4.11.2019
The Turkish government aims to destroy the 12,000 year old town Hasankeyf and the entire Tigris Valley through the Ilisu Dam project, which only has an economic lifespan of 50 years. We would like to borrow the sentence of a Roman poet “De te fabula narratur” (What is told is your story) and transform it into “What is set to be destroyed is your history”. A site where you can find the footprints of many people of this world is threatened with extinction. The cry rising from Hasankeyf and the Tigris Valley is growing daily.
Save 12,000 years old Hasankeyf!
Artists of the Paris based group ‘Compagnie bien à vous Armanc Kerborani’ do an urgent call to the planned destruction of the 12.000 years old city of Hasankeyf at the Tigris River in the Kurdistan region of Turkey. Today at 2 pm the members of the group, which painted their bodies, gathered at the entrance of the UNESCO center in Paris. One of the member chained itself to the gates of the UNESCO building. They called the UNESCO to act for Hasankeyf which is magnificient and outstanding cultural and natural heritage of this world!
On the 28.09.2019 there will be organized a cultural event in Istanbul for Hasankeyf and Tigris River. It starts at 5 pm with theatre, exhibitions and stalls and continues at 7 pm with a concert. Here are selected images and videos from the action day:
Satellite images from 7.9.19 show that the Ilisu Dam Reservoir is growing. It affects already one third of the planned Tigris River stretch to be flooded. At least 20 villages have been flooded. If this continues the dam reservior will achieve soon Hasankeyf and will increase the ecological, social and cultural destruction. The struggle against this project of destruction, exploitation and hegemony continues. We call on everybody to join the Global Hasankeyf Action Day on 14th September!
