A protest action against the Ilisu Dam in the town of Dargecit (Kerboran) is confronted with repression. The youth of DBP (Democratic Regions Party) has started this protest on the 13th of April 2015 in order to raise attention against the ongoing construction of the Ilisu Dam.

Ilisu Dam protest close to the dam site!

Today more than 500 people have protested the destructive Ilisu Dam project in the town of Dargecit. The demonstrators aimed at protesting at the dam site, but were prevented by the police.

A group of DBP youth marched from Batman to Hasankeyf in order to protest the Ilisu Dam and for the rescuing of Hasankeyf.

The march started in front of the municipality of Batman. The protestors argued that their aim is to defend the water, land, energy and culture of the region against profit and repression.

With the continuation of the construction of the Ilisu Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant on the Tigris River in December 2014, the dam construction site has been militarized intensely. This alarming development leads to grave political tensions and human rights violation, in spite of the expected dramatic social, cultural and ecological impacts in the affected region.

Ilisu Dam’s construction may be continued after a 4 month halt!

The Turkish State Hydraulic Works (DSI) has announced few days ago that after a four month break that the construction of the highly criticized Ilisu Dam and Hydroelectric Powerplant Project will continue immediately. If the construction starts again, the Ilisu Dam on the Tigris River may be finished next year which would lead to a huge social, cultural and ecological destruction and also a higher political instability.
