Despite strong domestic and international opposition, the Turkish government has commenced filling the reservoir of the controversial Ilisu Dam on the Tigris River in the Kurdish Southeast of Turkey without giving any official warning to those still living in the area.

Art performance in the Vatican: Save 12,000 years old Hasankeyf! Stop Ilisu Dam!
Artists of the group ‘Compagnie bien à vous Armanc Kerborani’ are drawing attention to the planned destruction of the historic city of Hasankeyf. With the support of Zehra Dogan (artist and journalist), the group gave recent performances in Paris at the Louvre Museum under the Pyramid on Thursday, 27 June 2019 and in Berlin at the Pergamum Museum in front of the Gate of Ishtar on Saturday, 13 July 2019.

At the end of the video police intervenes and detained the artists! But they have been released after 2 hours.

25 bar associations in Hasankeyf call on the government to stop Ilisu Project!
25 bar associations from all over Turkey gathered in Hasankeyf today and requested not to flood Hasankeyf and to stop the Ilisu Dam Project. An important contribution to stop this project of destruction, exploitation and hegemony!

Successful “Big Jump” actions for Hasankeyf and Tigris River
Following a call by the Initiative to Keep Alive (HYG) and the Mesopotamia Ecology Movement (MEM) for the “Big Jump” ecology activists in Hasankeyf, Turkey and the world protested the controversial Ilisu Dam on the 14th of July. This action day (“Big Jump” is an int’l action day since 2002) is the continuation of the growing activities of the last 1,5 months against the Ilisu Dam which is almost ready for the filling of its reservoir. So in the actions in more than 25 places the participants requested the immediate stop of the mega dam which would also devastate the Tigris region along the Tigris also in Iraq.

Art Performance for Hasankeyf in the Pergamon Museum of Berlin
On the 13th July 2019 a group of three artists from the Compagnie Bien a Vous Armanc Kerboranî from Paris (Juan-Golan Elibeg, Thomas Lamouroux ve Aurélie Gerardine) and the Kurdish painter Zehra Dogan organized a performance in the Pergamon Museum of Berlin. The motivation was to draw attention on Hasankeyf and request from the Pergamon Museum to do a call against the flooding of Hasankeyf. Visitors showed big interest in the action which raised big interest also in the media.

On the second Sunday in July each year, people in Europe and beyond do a “big jump” into rivers and lakes as part of a campaign for the conservation and renaturation of our freshwater ecosystems.
A Message on Ilisu Dam From Iraqi Civil Society to the Turkish Government

Humat Dijlah Association (Tigris River Protectors) – the Iraqi partner for Save the Tigris Campaign – and a wide range of Iraqi civil society organizations, movements, and individuals (signed below) address the Turkish Government to abandon the decision to flood the Ilisu Dam because of the serious environmental effects that will affect directly on Iraq. Where the water supply to major cities and Iraqi agriculture will be at the risk of drought. While the process of filling the dam threatens the natural places that have a diverse biological dimension in Iraq, in particular, the Marshlands, which is one of the natural and heritage sites listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List that is populated by an essential component of Mesopotamia in southern Iraq.
Istanbul will join also the Big Jump for Hasankeyf and Tigris Valley!

Europa Nostra: It’s not too late to save Hasankeyf!
At their meetings that were held in Athens on 18-19 June 2019, the Board and Council of Europa Nostra deplored the lack of positive news and developments in Hasankeyf. The present public statement is the result of these discussions and serious concerns. It contains numerous reasons why Europa Nostra strongly believes that the Turkish authorities should refrain from flooding Hasankeyf and its surroundings.
